Meet the Lady in RED
AMY KATE
Hey Reds, I’m Amy Kate, founder of The RED Way. Here is a little bit about me. My love for football begins in my childhood when I was just four years old. I remember being devastated that I couldn’t play with the other kids, most of whom were boys because I hadn’t yet turned five. At that point in time, there was nothing worse in life than sitting on the sidelines on a weekend morning watching your sibling kick the ball about and not being allowed to play. So, like any other mature four year old I cried, and not so patiently waited, until I was five when my parents signed me up. I continued to play competitively all through school in spite of tearing my ACL in both knees, two years apart and up until my early 30s. I still have a kick about from time to time as well. I also coached an all-girls club team for four years.
For me, summer 1991 was an important time in my life. Women were finally recognized in the sport with China hosting the first ever Women’s World Cup. Better still the USA won our first of four titles. It added legitimacy to what I did, I played a women’s team sport at a time when that was considered largely secondary to the men’s game.
Fast forward to 1998, I discovered English Premier League. I would wake up on the weekend at the crack of dawn and watch whatever game was on because this time the pundits spoke English. It was not long after when Liverpool FC found me and my passion started for my beloved club and this lifelong bond began. It’s when I first saw Steven Gerrard. It was his first season with the first team and I saw what an incredible player he was, and to me, always will be. Gerrard epitomized me; no holds barred playing full tilt as if my life depended on it. No wonder we both picked up so many injuries! I fell in love with the club, their passion, the family feeling and truly believing in You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “The Liverpool Way”.
But you can’t truly understand the feeling until you have made the journey, however far it is for each individual, and have sat in stadium at Anfield hearing "You'll Never Walk Alone" and watch Liverpool play. For me, it was a dream come true many years in the making. It was such an emotional experience and every time I’ve been in the ground since, it’s that same overwhelming feeling of love and pride for the club.
I formed a supporters club in Carlsbad, California in North San Diego and became official in the 2017/18 season. We are a small group right now, but it's just the start and we enjoy watching matches together. I also am the co-founder of the USA Kop with two other fellow reds.
On March 8, 2019, International Women's Day worldwide, I was in Liverpool to help launching a new campaign with several incredible women called 'LIVERGIRLS INTERNATIONAL' and honored to represent North America as a committee member of this platform.
